Do No Harm: Impact on Grading Policy

GOAL
Create a flexible grading system through a credit/no credit option for all students within Pulaski County Special School District. However, after looking at our student database this is not a possibility.

OBJECTIVE
The Pulaski County Special School District central office leadership and local school leaders have developed a process to address our students’ and families’ needs with flexibility and a “do no harm” approach. Through this approach, it is our hope that many of the inequities in education that have been intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic will be reduced.

  • All students will have an opportunity to bring up their 3rd quarter grade if needed.
    • Semester grades for secondary students will be determined based on which benefits the student most, meaning the better of the two grades will be selected as the student’s final grade for the second semester.
      • Example: If the 3rd quarter grade is a  C and the 4th quarter teacher assignment or AMI completion percentage is 80% (B), take the higher of the two grades. Therefore, the B will be the semester grade.
  • Grades K - 5
    • There will be NO retentions second semester for grades K - 5 unless requested by a parent in writing.
    • Students in grades K - 5 will receive Credit (CR) or No Credit (NCR).
  • Grades 6 - 8
    • Students in grades  6 - 8 will follow an A - D grading scale. There will be NO retentions second semester for grades 6 - 8 unless requested by a parent in writing.
    • Students in 8th grade enrolled in credit-bearing courses who refused to actively participate in the course for the 4th quarter will receive a failing grade.
    • Action plans will be created for credit-bearing courses where students were not successful during the 3rd quarter.
  • Grades 9 -12
    • Students in grades  9 - 12 will follow an A - D grading scale.
    • Students who refused to actively participate in the course for the 4th quarter will receive a failing grade.
    • Action plans will be created for credit-bearing courses where students were not successful during the 3rd quarter
  • SENIORS have until May 1 to submit make-up assignments in order to improve their 3rd quarter grade.
