UPDATE: Mr. Flowers is one of 20 Teach Plus Policy Fellows selected for the inaugural policy fellowship.

“I couldn't be more excited to welcome our first cohort of Policy Fellows. By developing their research and advocacy skills, and providing resources and support to these outstanding classroom practitioners, we hope to advance policy change and equity for the students of Arkansas,” said Teach Plus Arkansas State Director Stacey McAdoo.

Michael Flowers is a 9th-12th grade Social Studies teacher, Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach, and Head Softball Coach at Wilbur D. Mills University Studies High School in Little Rock, AR. He currently teaches Civics/Economics, World History, and American History. Michael served as Mills Social Studies Department Head from 2017-2019 and has been an assistant coach for Mills three-time Varsity Boys’ Basketball team in 2017, 2020, and 2021. He earned his BS in Social Studies Education credential from the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff and an MEd in Educational Leadership credential from Arkansas State University, Jonesboro.


PULASKI COUNTY, Ark. -- Mills University Studies High School social studies teacher, Michael Flowers,  has been selected as a Policy Fellow for Teach Plus Arkansas. Flowers is one of 20 teachers from the state to be part of the organization’s first ever cohort of Teach Plus Arkansas Policy Fellows this August.

As a policy fellow, Flowers will work with other educators from around Arkansas to learn policy and advocacy skills and meet with decision-makers. He will also have the opportunity to work on critical issues that they are passionate about and collaborate with their peers to make changes for Arkansas students.

“We are proud of Mr. Flowers and his commitment to the students at Mills University Studies High,” said principal Duane Clayton. “This fellowship will provide opportunities for our school and students through Mr. Flowers and I am looking forward to watching him continue to learn through this program.”

Flowers is a 9-12 grade teacher, as well as an assistant varsity basketball coach and head softball coach. He currently teaches civics/economics, world history, and American history, including serving as department head from 2017-2019. Flowers earned his Bachelor of Science in social studies education from the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, and a Masters of Education in educational leadership from Arkansas State University.
